Heal Scars and Stretch marks with this DIY Remedy

Our scars tell a story. That time we grazed our knee when we were learning to ride a bike. Or when we got stitches in our chin from slipping on the floor while dancing at a birthday party. Or maybe it’s the stretch marks on our belly from carrying our beloved child.

Yes, our scars tell a story and are beautiful in their own way. But healing our scars is also part of the story, and specific essential oils can help along the healing process with the added benefits of aromatherapy. Learn more about the best essential oils to reduce the appearance of scars, as well as our powerful healing recipe blend that will gently and effectively lighten your scars and stretch marks.

Lavender Essential Oil for gentle scar healing

Lavender essential oil is one of nature’s most powerful healers. This essential oil powerhouse has anti-bacterial, antioxidant and anti septic properties, and is gentle enough to use without any dilution.

Studies have shown lavender to heal scars by cultivating more collagen production in the skin, regenerating the cells and repairing damage. This was shown to be more effective the sooner it is applied after the wound occurs, yet it will still improve older existing scars considerably.

Lighten scars with Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil is effective at both healing and reducing the red appearance of scars. Its extraordinarily high levels of vitamin C act as a powerful antioxidant, exactly what your skin needs to regenerate healthy cells.

Lemon oil acts as a powerful skin tonic, while its astringent qualities detoxify, tone and rejuvenate scarred skin. Using lemon oil on scars and even sun damage can significantly lighten and heal scars, but be sure to avoid the sun after applying. Lemon oil, like many other citrus based oils caused photosensitivity and are best used  while indoors or at night.

Harness Myrrh Essential Oil’s Ancient Healing Properties

Myrrh essential oil comes from the healing resin of the Commiphora tree and has been used for millennia for its incredible therapeutic properties. Its magic stems from terpenoids and sesquiterpenes, two naturally occurring compounds that support wound healing and skin cell regeneration.

Myrrh’s natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory are also effective at treating both new and old wounds.

Patchouli Oil for Cell Regeneration

Patchouli essential oil has been shown to stimulate cell regeneration, exactly what we need to heal both new and pre-existing scars. It is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, among its many other healing properties, which helps heal and reduce new and existing scars.

Like lemon oil, patchouli is an astringent, which means it serves to tighten and tone skin, reducing the appearance of stretch marks. Patchouli is a potent and powerful oil and must always be diluted before applying directly to the skin.

Why carrier oil do I choose?

Along with the essential oils, the carrier oil you choose also has a healing effect on scars and stretch marks. Different carrier oils serve different purposes. Or example, some are best for moisture, while others suit acne prone skin.

When choosing a carrier oil for scarring, we recommend going for one that has a high vitamin A or vitamin content to boost the effectiveness of the essential oil. Our top three recommendations are Rosehip oil, Vitamin E oil or Almond oil. Whichever suits your budget.
