Background

Cymbopogon flexuous, also known as Cochin grass, Malabar grass, or Lemongrass, is a dense shrub found in moist regions of India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other South-East Asian countries. The shrub has razor-shaped leaves that emit a strong fragrance with a lime-like hint. Lemongrass has been used to produce essential oils and perfumes for centuries. Its trade started in the early 19th century, gradually spreading as its therapeutic and aesthetic uses were realised on other shores.

General Information

Ecodrop’s Organic Lemongrass essential oil is produced from leaves of Cymbopogon flexuous grown in the tropical regions of eastern India and certified under UK Soil Association Organic Standards. The top portion of the leaf contains the highest concentration of oil, which gradually depletes in the presence of noon sun. To avoid this, Ecodrop harvests the leaves early in the morning, when morning dew is still present on the leaves. Advanced machinery and tools are used for precise cutting and to avoid splitting of the edges. It is then left to dry in the shade. When the dried leaves start giving out a strong aroma, these are sent for extraction of oil by the steam distillation process.

Benefits and Uses

Uses

Insect repellent: The strong smell of Lemongrass is hated by insects, and they tend to leave the area as soon as they can. It is highly effective in repelling mosquitoes responsible for diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya.

Skincare: It regulates the oil production of the skin and cures pimples and acne. It’s ideal for use during the summer season.

Common remedies: Lemongrass oil can treat headaches, relieve muscle cramps, reduce fever, and increase wound recovery rate.

Natural deodorant: With a pleasant fragrance and cooling effect, this citrus oil acts as a natural antiperspirant and deodoriser.

Haircare: Used in shampoo and hair oils, it repairs hair follicles, removes dandruff, and prevents lice formation.

Directions

Diffusion: Add 6-8 drops to your diffuser. Lemongrass blends well with Thyme, Marjoram, and other citrus oils.

Night cream: Add 15-20 drops to 30 ml of any carrier oil of your choice. Use as a night cream.

Insect repellent: Add 8-10 drops to distilled water and sprinkle the area around your house. Optionally, combine with Patchouli to repel more insect species.

Dandruff prevention: Add 4-5 drops to your shampoo. Alternatively, mix 3-4 drops in a tbsp of coconut oil. Give yourself a scalp massage with this oil once a week.

A wonderfully calming scent with multiple uses – entirely natural and cruelty free.
On the advice of a friend who is a professional well-being coach, I am starting to explore the benefits of essential oils as an alternative scent for the home, and as part of my self-care routine. Lemongrass is great for meditation as it is very calming, and it is also a lovely scent to wear on my wrists to keep me calm during the day. It makes the house smell great too. The ebook is really helpful because it suggests all the ways you can use different essential oils to enhance the home and the body. I also feel like I am doing my bit for the environment, as it is a natural product with no harsh chemicals, and most importantly to me, no animal testing.
