Background

Cedarus atlantica, commonly known as Atlas Cedarwood or the Moroccan Cedarwood, is a coniferous evergreen tree native to Morocco and Algeria. This magnificent cedar tree, usually 30-40 metres in height, naturally grows at an elevation of 1300-1600 metres above the sea level and requires full sun. Once fully grown, it is tolerant of drought and hot climatic conditions.
In Europe and the Mediterranean region, Atlas cedar is widely cultivated for ornamental purposes and for afforestation. The essential oil derived from the bark of this tree has a long history of use in medicine, beauty, soap making, perfumery, and as an insect repellent. In ancient Egypt, it was employed in the mummification process. Native American tribes used it to cure digestive disorders and breathing difficulties.

General Information

Ecodrop’s Cedarwood essential oil is derived from steam distillation of the Cedrus atlantica tree bark. The tree bark is ethically sourced from our plantations in Morocco, certified organic by the UK Soil Association.

Benefits and Uses

Uses

Aromatherapy: For use in aromatherapy, Cedarwood oil holds unique abilities. Most essential oils are either calming or invigorating, but Cedarwood is both. It invigorates and stimulates mental function, while at the same time discouraging restlessness and promoting calmness. Its woody aroma has a grounding effect on the mind, thus helping people with sleep disorders.

Decongestant: Diffusing a few drops in the room or massaging the chest area with a diluted version of Cedarwood essential oil can help ease congestion, breathing difficulties, coughing, and control mucus production.

Skincare: The astringent activity of Cedarwood oil is perfect for oily, acne-prone skin. It controls excessive oil production and soothes irritation, itching, and redness of the skin. It is also known to help in hyperpigmentation.

Haircare: Overuse of conditioners, gel, serums can cause chemicalsto accumulate on the scalp that can clog pores. If left untreated, this can trigger hair loss and scalp infection. Massaging the scalp with Cedarwood oil removes dandruff and clears material build-up. With its stimulating property, it also promotes hair growth.

Menstruation and PMS: Warm oil massage with cedarwood oil relieves menstrual cramps, relaxes uterine muscles, and helps handle irritability and mood swings.

Directions

Diffusion: Add 5-8 drops in your home diffuser. Atlas Cedarwood oil blends well with other warm, woody scents like Juniper, Patchouli, Cypress, and Sandalwood essential oils.

Beauty products: Add 2-3 drops in creams, lotions, hair gels, shampoo, conditioners, etc.

Bath oil: Add 1-2 drops directly in your bathwater.

Menstrual pain: Add 4-6 drops in 15 ml of warm (not hot) sesame oil. You can also blend 2-3 drops of Cedarwood oil with equal amounts of Rose oil.

Insect-repellent spray: Mix 10-12 drops in a cup of clean water. Spray this solution around the house for disinfecting the area and keeping insects at bay.
