The Subtle Art of Scent: Unlocking Your Reed Diffuser's Potential
There's a quiet art to a beautifully scented home, and a natural reed diffuser is one of the easiest ways to get there — a gentle, continuous fragrance with no flame and no electricity. To get the most from yours, a few simple habits make all the difference. Here's our guide.
How a reed diffuser works
A reed diffuser is a glass bottle of fragrant oil with several reeds that draw the oil up and release the scent into the air. The quality of the oil and the reeds decides how well it performs — which is why we use pure essential-oil blends and natural reeds across our reed diffuser collection.
Choosing the right ingredients
Pure essential oils: a diffuser made with pure essential oils gives a natural, layered fragrance straight from the plant, rather than a flat synthetic note. Look for one that clearly states 100% pure essential oils.
Natural reeds: bamboo or rattan reeds work best — their porous structure wicks the oil upward and spreads the scent. More reeds, or thicker ones, mean a stronger throw.
The bottle: a narrower neck slows evaporation and makes your diffuser last longer. Pick one that suits your space as well as your shelf.
Setting up your diffuser
- Unpack with care — remove the bottle, reeds, and stopper.
- Pour the oil into the bottle, taking care not to overfill.
- Add the reeds so they sit in the oil.
- Let it bloom — leave the reeds to soak for a few hours, then flip them to saturate the dry ends and kick-start the scent.
- Place it well — near a doorway or hallway where air moves, but out of direct sun and away from heat, which burns the oil off too fast.
Keeping it going
- Flip the reeds every one to two weeks to refresh the scent — over a tray, as the oil can mark some surfaces.
- Dial the strength — use more reeds for a bolder scent, fewer for something subtle (more reeds use the oil faster).
- Replace the reeds every few months, once they clog with dust and fade.
Different scents suit different rooms — try lavender in the bedroom, orange bergamot in the kitchen, and a warm wood sage & sea salt in the living room. If you love mixing scents, our posts on lavender diffuser blends and DIY room sprays are full of ideas.

High-quality essential oils and natural reeds, giving a consistent, long-lasting fragrance with a balanced throw that fills a room without overpowering it.
How long does a reed diffuser last?
It depends on bottle size, the number of reeds, and the room. On average a 100ml diffuser lasts between one and three months.
