Background

The highly empowering Bergamot essential oil is derived from the bergamot oranges of the Citrus aurantium bergamia tree, belonging to the Rutaceae family (the orange family). The plant is cultivated in France, Turkey, and Southern Italy and produces sour bergamot orange that resembles a cross between lemon and orange and tastes like a grapefruit. While the fruit itself is very sour and bitter, the delicious essential oil derived from it is immensely popular in aromatherapy for its heart-uplifting and therapeutic abilities. Bergamot oil is also used as a food flavouring agent in the famous Earl Grey tea.
The history of therapeutic uses of Bergamot essential oil traces back to the ancient Ayurveda. In Italian folk medicines, the fruit juice was used to treat digestive disorders and fever. Bergamot tree was known in the Mediterranean region for centuries. However, until the 16th century, it was cultivated only as an ornamental plant in the gardens of aristocratic Italian families. When a fine essence of bergamot fruit was accidentally mixed with water, its immense potential for perfumery was realised. In recent times, Bergamot oil is enjoying huge popularity all over the world for its versatile uses ranging from cosmetics and decorative uses to aromatherapy and medicinal benefits.

General Information

Ecodrop’s Bergamot essential oil is extracted by low heat cold pressing of freshly derived bergamot orange peels. The fruits are sourced from Citrus aurantium bergamia plantations in Italy. To obtain the highest quality of the oil, ripe bergamot fruits are harvested in the colder months of November and January. The extracted oil is light yellow and smells like a deliciously sweet citrus fruit.
