Background
Belonging to the ginger family Zingiberaceae, Curcuma longa or Turmeric is a perennial plant that can grow up to 1 metre in height. Native to the Indian subcontinent, the subspecies of this plant can also be found in other Asian countries. It bears long dark-green leaves and white to purple coloured flowers that do not reproduce. The leaves emerge from branching rhizomes that sprawl just below the soil surface. These rhizomes possess a strong musky earth-like scent. Turmeric is cultivated worldwide for its rhizomes, which are used for culinary purposes and in medicines, either in the form of dry powder or essential oil.
General Information
Ecodrop’s Organic Turmeric essential oil is produced from ethically sourced Curcuma longa roots, grown in the tropical lands of India, certified organic by the UK Soil Association. The highest concentration of oil is present in matured rhizomes, which is why extraction is carried out only in the summer season when browning of leaves indicate that turmeric has matured and is ready to harvest. Once unrooted, these are left to dry and then carried to the distillery where extraction of the essential oil takes place by the CO2 method. CO2 method produces a higher quality of the oil that retains the intense aroma of the herb. As this method involves low heat, it ensures minimum constituent loss during the process. In this method, pressurized Carbon dioxide (CO2) is passed through the dried rhizome, after which it is dissolved in ethanol. The resulting solution is a mixture of CO2, ethanol, and the chemical constituents of turmeric oil. Since CO2 and ethanol have low boiling points, a lower temperature is needed to separate these from the pure Turmeric essential oil.
