Q: Is this clove bud oil pure, and is it the same as clove oil?

Yes, 100% pure clove bud oil, Syzygium aromaticum , with nothing added and nothing diluted, bottled in the UK and GC/MS tested. It is steam distilled in Indonesia from the dried flower buds of the clove tree, the same cloves you keep in the spice cupboard. "Clove oil", "oil of cloves" and "essential oil of cloves" can mean any of three oils: bud, leaf or stem. This is the bud oil, the one perfumers and aromatherapists prefer. On older labels you will see the tree called Eugenia caryophyllata or Eugenia caryophyllus ; the INCI name on ours is Eugenia Caryophyllus Bud Oil. Our typical GC/MS analysis is free to download in the Documents tab, and shows eugenol at 77.9%.

Q: Can I put clove oil on my skin?

Only well diluted. We suggest 0.5% or less , about 3 drops in 30ml of carrier oil, which sits under the 0.78% ceiling on our IFRA certificate for body oils and lotions. Never neat, and never on the face: IFRA caps face products at 0.37%. Patch test on the inner arm first and wait 24 hours. If it stings, wipe it off with carrier oil rather than water. Avoid skin use if you take blood thinners or react to cinnamon or balsam of Peru.

Q: Clove bud oil vs clove leaf oil: what is the difference?

All three come from the same tree, Syzygium aromaticum , but they are not the same oil: Clove bud oil is distilled from the dried flower buds. It is the sweetest and richest, with eugenyl acetate (13.0% on our typical GC) rounding off the eugenol. This is the one in this bottle. Clove leaf oil is distilled from the leaves. It is cheaper and harsher, with more eugenol and almost no eugenyl acetate, and it smells more medicinal. Clove stem oil sits between the two and is mostly used in industry. If a clove oil is much cheaper than this, check the label: it is very often leaf oil.

How to use & dilute

Everyday uses

In a diffuser: 1 to 2 drops with softer oils. Clove leads any blend it joins.
Christmas trio: 3 drops sweet orange, 1 cinnamon bark, 1 clove bud.
Candle making: up to a fifth of your fragrance blend, with orange and vanilla-style scents.
Cleaning spray: 5 drops in a 500ml spray of half water, half white vinegar. Shake before use.
Outdoor and bed-frame spray: 5 drops in 100ml water with a teaspoon of witch hazel. Spray surfaces, not people.
Pot-pourri: 2 to 3 drops to revive a tired bowl.

How to dilute

Body: 0.5% or less, about 3 drops per 30ml of carrier oil. IFRA's own ceiling for body oils and lotions is 0.78%.
Face: not recommended. IFRA caps face products at 0.37%, and clove is too hot for facial skin.

Hot oil: clove can irritate or burn skin. Keep to 0.5% or less, never neat, never on the face, and patch test first.
Skin sensitiser: eugenol, about 80% of this oil, is a listed fragrance allergen. If you react to cloves, cinnamon or balsam of Peru, avoid it on skin.
Blood thinners: if you take anticoagulant medication, have a bleeding disorder or are due surgery, ask your doctor before using clove on skin.
External use only: do not swallow, and keep it away from eyes and the inside of the nose.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding: check with a qualified healthcare professional before use.
Children: keep out of reach. Not for babies or young children; IFRA's limit for baby products is just 0.12%.
Pets: cats in particular are sensitive to eugenol. Do not diffuse it in rooms pets cannot leave.

Cloves are the unopened flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, an evergreen tree native to the Maluku islands of Indonesia, the original Spice Islands. The buds are picked by hand while still pink, just before they bloom, and dried in the sun until they turn rusty brown.

Our clove bud oil is steam distilled from those dried buds in Indonesia. It is about 80% eugenol, the molecule that makes clove smell like clove, softened by eugenyl acetate and beta-caryophyllene.

It is also heavier than water. Drop it into a glass and it sinks, which very few essential oils do.

Warmth by the drop

The heart of a winter home

One drop of clove bud with three of sweet orange and one of cinnamon, and the kitchen smells like baking day. It is the oil that makes a blend feel like December, and it is not limited in IFRA's candle category.

Use it the way you use cloves in cooking: a little, and never alone. In a diffuser, one or two drops with softer oils is plenty.

On skin, keep it under 0.5% in a carrier oil and away from the face. Around the house, a few drops in a vinegar spray freshen bins and damp corners.

Is this clove bud oil pure, and is it the same as clove oil?

Yes, 100% pure clove bud oil, Syzygium aromaticum, with nothing added and nothing diluted, bottled in the UK and GC/MS tested. It is steam distilled in Indonesia from the dried flower buds of the clove tree, the same cloves you keep in the spice cupboard.

"Clove oil", "oil of cloves" and "essential oil of cloves" can mean any of three oils: bud, leaf or stem. This is the bud oil, the one perfumers and aromatherapists prefer. On older labels you will see the tree called Eugenia caryophyllata or Eugenia caryophyllus; the INCI name on ours is Eugenia Caryophyllus Bud Oil.

Can I use clove oil for toothache?

Clove is the traditional toothache remedy, and eugenol is still used by dentists. But this is an aromatherapy oil, not a medicine, and we cannot recommend it for tooth pain. Undiluted clove oil can burn the gums. The licensed product for toothache is Clove Oil BP from a pharmacy, and the right person to see is a dentist.

Clove is also a classic flavour in oral care. Its IFRA certificate allows up to 1.78% in toothpaste and mouthwash (Category 6). If you make your own toothpaste, 1 to 2 drops in a 10g batch keeps you well inside that, and never put the oil on gums neat.

Is clove oil safe around pets and children?

Use it with care. Cats in particular are sensitive to eugenol, so do not diffuse clove in a room your pet cannot leave, and never apply it to animals.

Keep the bottle out of children's reach. Clove is not for use on babies or young children; IFRA's limit for baby products is only 0.12%. For a family room, one drop in a blend, a short session and an open window is plenty.

Is clove oil a good insect repellent?

It is one of the strongest, and that is down to a single molecule. Clove bud oil is about 80% eugenol, which is sharp, hot and disliked by most insects. It is also why clove is uncomfortable neat on skin, so the rule is always to use less than you think.

Its IFRA certificate covers the uses directly. Category 5A, which includes "insect repellent (intended to be applied to the skin)", allows up to 0.78%. Aerosol and spray insecticides (10B) go to 3.75%, and mosquito coils and candles (12) are not limited.

What people use it for

Bed bugs: the most searched use. Added to homemade mattress seam and bed-frame sprays, usually with lemongrass.
Ants: wiped along the trail and the entry point, which breaks the scent path they follow.
Flies and mosquitoes: a small part of an outdoor blend or candle. Clove is too dominant to be the whole thing.
Clothes moths: the traditional pomander, an orange studded with cloves, was a moth deterrent as much as a scent.

Use 5 drops in 100ml of water with witch hazel for a surface spray, and keep it off pets. It discourages insects from settling; it will not clear an established bed bug infestation.

Is clove bud oil food grade, or can I take it internally?

No. Our bottles are packed and labelled for aromatherapy, home fragrance and making, not as a food, and we do not recommend swallowing it. Essential oils are far stronger than the spice: one drop of clove bud oil holds the oil of several whole cloves.

Our supplier confirms the raw oil meets the EU rules for flavouring ingredients, which is why clove appears in food manufacturing. That is a different supply chain with different controls. For cooking, use whole or ground cloves.
