Organic French Lavender Essential Oil

Yes, lavender is one of the most popular oils for winding down. Diffuse 3–5 drops in the bedroom before bed, or add a diluted drop to a pillow mist, to help create a calm, sleep-friendly atmosphere.

Always dilute first. Mix lavender essential oil to about 1–2% in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond before applying, and patch-test. Don't apply the neat oil to skin.

Used properly, yes to both, and the plant question is the one to get right first. Essential oils are concentrated and will scorch foliage if you spray them neat or too strong, which is what people mean when they ask whether lavender oil is bad for plants. The oil is not the problem; the dose and the timing are.

How to spray it safely

• Strength: 5 to 10 drops in 500ml of water with one drop of washing-up liquid so it mixes instead of floating. That is as strong as it needs to be.
• Timing: spray in the evening or on a dull day. Oil on a leaf in direct sun is what causes scorch.
• Test first: do one leaf and wait 24 hours before doing the whole plant. Skip seedlings and anything you are about to eat.

On aphids lavender works as a deterrent rather than a killer: it makes the plant less attractive to land on, so it is best used early and repeated weekly, not as a rescue for a plant already covered. Gardeners usually pair it with peppermint, which is the harder-working half of that blend, and the two together are what most homemade recipes call for.

Indoors it is the gentlest of the repellent oils, which is why it goes in drawers and linen cupboards against clothes moths where something sharper would be unpleasant to live with. Lavender bags on a wardrobe rail are the same idea, and a few drops will bring a tired one back.

Keep diffusing short and light, always leave the door open so an animal can walk away, and never apply lavender oil to a pet's skin or fur. Cats are the main concern, as they lack some of the liver enzymes needed to process essential oils. Check with your vet before using any essential oil around cats, birds, rabbits or small animals.

French lavender, meaning Lavandula angustifolia grown in France, has a softer, sweeter, more rounded floral aroma than sharper lavender types, which is why it is the usual choice for relaxation and skincare. It is not the same as lavandin, a hardier hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender that yields far more oil and smells sharper and more camphorous. It is also not the same as 40/42 lavender, a standardised blend adjusted to hit a fixed linalool and linalyl acetate ratio. Lavender is the most forgiving oil on the shelf and blends well with almost everything. The scents that go with lavender fall into four groups:

• Citrus: bergamot, sweet orange, lemon, grapefruit. Lifts lavender and makes it feel brighter and less sleepy.
• Florals: geranium, Roman chamomile, ylang ylang, rose, jasmine, neroli. Richer and rounder, best in the evening.
• Woods and resins: cedarwood, sandalwood, frankincense, vetiver. These anchor lavender and make a blend last.
• Herbs: rosemary, clary sage, peppermint, eucalyptus. Fresher and more awake, good for daytime and for muscle rubs.

Four lavender blend recipes

• Sleep: 3 lavender, 2 Roman chamomile, 1 cedarwood.
• Calm but awake: 3 lavender, 2 bergamot, 1 geranium.
• Clear head: 3 lavender, 2 rosemary, 1 peppermint.
• Grounding: 3 lavender, 2 frankincense, 1 sandalwood.

A practical rule: lavender can take the largest share of a blend without overwhelming it, which is why almost every beginner recipe starts there. If a blend smells wrong, adding a drop more lavender usually fixes it.
