Background
Citrus fruits have been used as natural remedies against various household problems since ancient times. One such fruit is lime. It is often confused with its cousin lemon. Lime shares many qualities with lemon and is often used in its place. Distilled lime oil is mainly used in the food and beverage industry as a flavouring agent and occasionally as a fragrance component. The fruit is the most valuable part of the lime plant. It grows well in alluvial soil and the state of Maharashtra boasts of having the best lime in India. Lime is popular in making pickles and as a citrus agent in foods.
General Information
Citrus aurantifolia, also known as Key lime, is a juicy, aromatic citrus fruit used for making lime essential oil. Key limes grow on small, shrubby flowering trees. The lime fruit ripens after the flowers of the tree have blossomed. Thought to be native to areas in Southeast Asia, the lime gained popularity in the Florida Keys. It was grown here as it was used as the main ingredient for very famous Key lime pie, hence the name. After the citrus aurantifolia is harvested, the peel is cold pressed to produce a tart, refreshing essential oil.
