Best DIY natural mosquito repellent that works

In many warm and tropical countries, mosquitos can be a real source of frustration, leaving itchy marks that are far from pleasant to deal with. Many conventional repellents rely on harsh synthetic ingredients, which is why a lot of people prefer a gentler, natural alternative for their skin. This balm is one I have made and used myself on trips to these countries, and it has become a travel essential.

Why a balm rather than a spray

  • The oily consistency of a balm gives full, even coverage and stays on the skin for much longer than a spray.
  • It is firm but glides on easily, so you only need a small amount. It stays solid even in hot tropical climates, making it easy to carry in your bag.
  • Sprays often leak in luggage no matter how carefully they are packed, so a balm is far more travel-friendly.
  • This recipe can help repel many types of insect, so it works well beyond the tropics. It is ideal for camping, especially with little ones along.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup beeswax pastilles
  • 1/4 cup cocoa butter
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 2 & 1/2 tablespoons castor oil
  • 15 drops Lemongrass essential oil
  • 15 drops Citronella essential oil
  • 10 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 10 drops Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5 drops Peppermint oil
  • 5 drops Geranium essential oil
  • 5 drops Lavender essential oil

Instructions

  1. Place all of the ingredients except for the essential oils in a heat-safe bowl. Set the bowl over a saucepan of simmering water and allow the butter and beeswax to melt to a liquid.
  2. Once everything has melted, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly before adding the essential oils.
  3. Add the essential oils, mix thoroughly, and pour the mixture into glass jars, metal tins, or cosmetic-grade plastic containers to set. You will need two 12 ml (4 oz) jars or containers.
  4. In about 30 minutes the balm should be fully cooled and ready for a lid and a label. Always write the product name, ingredients and date made on the label.

How to use and store

The finished balm is quite firm, which makes it a great repellent to carry in your bag. A little goes a long way, giving full coverage that stays on the skin for a long time. Apply a thin layer to exposed skin and reapply as needed, especially around dawn and dusk when insects are most active. Keep it out of direct heat and avoid the eye area.

Safe use: essential oils are concentrated, so always patch test on a small area first and discontinue if any irritation occurs. This balm is for external use only and should not be ingested. Take extra care with young children and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, seek advice before use.

FAQs

How long does the mosquito repellent balm last on the skin?

Because of its oily, water-resistant base, the balm tends to stay on the skin longer than a spray. Reapply every couple of hours and after swimming or heavy sweating.

How long will the balm keep?

Stored in a cool, dark place in a sealed container, the balm typically keeps for around 6 to 12 months. Label it with the date made and discard if the scent or texture changes.

Can I use this balm on children?

Use with caution on children, as essential oils are potent. Patch test first, keep away from the face and hands, and seek advice for babies and very young children before applying.

What can I use instead of beeswax?

A plant-based wax such as candelilla wax can be used in place of beeswax for a vegan version. You may need to adjust the quantity slightly, as candelilla sets harder than beeswax.

Will this balm repel insects other than mosquitos?

The blend can help deter a range of biting insects, so it is a useful all-round option for camping and travel, not just for mosquitos in tropical climates.
