Yes, and there is one distinction worth making before anything else, because it catches people out. The famous mosquito repellent is lemon eucalyptus (Corymbia citriodora), whose refined extract PMD is the one health bodies actually recommend. This is Eucalyptus globulus, the familiar cineole-rich oil. It is a genuine deterrent and a very good one indoors, but it is not the same material as PMD and we would rather say so than let you assume otherwise.

What it does well

• Flies: one of the best oils for it, diffused or wiped around windows and doorframes.
• Mosquitoes and midges: effective as a deterrent in a blend, usually with lemongrass or citronella.
• Garden pests: 5 to 10 drops in 500ml of water with a drop of washing-up liquid, sprayed in the evening, tested on one leaf first and kept off seedlings.

Will it kill plants? Not at that dilution. Scorch comes from spraying neat, spraying too strong, or spraying onto leaves in full sun. Eucalyptus is one of the stronger oils on foliage, so stay at the weak end and repeat weekly rather than going heavier once.

Keep eucalyptus away from cats and dogs, and out of rooms shared with very young children. Lavender is the oil to use instead where that matters.

Not on or near the faces of babies or young children: the high natural cineole content is too strong for little airways. Keep bottles well out of reach.
