Yes. It is 100% pure Cupressus sempervirens, steam distilled from the leaves and twigs in Italy and bottled here in the UK, with nothing added and nothing diluted. Our batch GC reads alpha-pinene 51.2%, delta-3-carene 18.3% and beta-pinene 13.9%, which is a textbook Italian cypress profile.

As for what it is good for, cypress is the dry, clean one. Where pine smells of sap and cedarwood of warm timber, cypress smells of a tree in full sun with no stickiness at all, and that dryness is the whole point of it. It is why the oil is used in leg and foot blends, in homemade deodorants, in woody colognes and at a desk rather than at bedtime.

It is also the conifer people reach for at turning points. Aromatherapists have always associated cypress with transition and composure, which is less about chemistry than about the tree: upright, evergreen, and planted along Mediterranean avenues for centuries.

It is the use cypress is best known for, and it has been the standard choice in leg and foot blends for as long as aromatherapy has existed. The oil feels cool, dry and toning rather than warming, which is what people want after a day spent standing.

How to use it

• The classic blend: 4 drops cypress with 2 drops peppermint in 30ml of carrier oil, which lands at about 1%.
• The direction matters: work upwards, ankle towards knee, in long slow strokes rather than rubbing.
• A foot soak instead: 3 to 4 drops in a spoonful of carrier oil swirled into cool, not hot, water.

Cypress and peppermint is such a common pairing that people search for it by name. Peppermint brings the cold, cypress brings the dryness, and the two together are more effective than either on its own. Keep it to 1 to 2% and patch test before the first full application.

This is a massage and comfort routine rather than a treatment. If legs are persistently swollen or painful, that is a conversation for a GP rather than a bottle of oil.

Treat it as a conifer, which means careful rather than forbidden. Cats in particular do not process terpenes the way we do, and cypress is almost entirely terpenes, so the sensible approach is to control exposure rather than assume it is fine.

• Diffuse only in a ventilated room the animal can walk out of, and in short bursts rather than all day.
• Never apply it to fur or skin, and never add it to a pet shampoo or bed spray at home.
• Keep the bottle where it cannot be knocked over, since a spill on a floor is the realistic risk.
• Do not use cypress floor or surface sprays where a cat walks and then grooms its paws.

If you want something you can diffuse freely in a house with animals, lavender or sweet orange are the easier choices.

• Blue cypress is a completely different tree: Callitris intratropica from northern Australia, distilled from the wood, and a deep ink blue from the guaiazulene in it. It smells sweeter and smokier and costs considerably more. If a recipe calls for blue cypress, this is not a substitute.
• Cypress leaf extract, including small flower cypress leaf extract, is not an essential oil at all. Those are water or solvent extracts used as ingredients in skincare formulations, and they behave completely differently.
• Cypress tree oil usually just means this: the ordinary essential oil, described loosely.

If a label gives no botanical name, ask before you buy. With cypress the species genuinely changes what you get, in colour, smell and price.

It suits oily and congested skin specifically, and it is a poor choice for dry skin. Cypress is a drying, astringent-feeling oil, so the thing that makes it useful on a shiny T-zone is the same thing that makes it the wrong pick for a tight, flaky face.

Use it at 1% at most on the face, which is one drop in 30ml of jojoba. Jojoba is the carrier that makes sense here because it is light and does not add richness back in. Patch test on your inner forearm and wait 24 hours before putting anything new near your face.

For feet and legs you can go higher, 1 to 2%, and that is where most people get the best out of it. Keep it away from the eye area, do not use it on broken or irritated skin, and remember that an oxidised conifer oil is far more likely to irritate than a fresh one, so check how long the bottle has been open.

Cypress is a dry green middle note, and its job in a blend is structure. It gives a composition a clean spine without adding sweetness, which is exactly why perfumers like it and why it rescues blends that have gone too soft.

Five cypress blends

• The cologne: 3 cypress, 2 juniper berry, 3 bergamot. The one most people come here for.
• Tired legs, at 1% in 30ml: 4 cypress, 2 peppermint.
• Whole forest: 2 cypress, 3 pine, 2 cedarwood.
• Clear desk: 3 cypress, 2 rosemary, 3 lemon.
• Quiet evening: 2 cypress, 3 lavender, 1 frankincense.

One rule worth knowing: cypress is easy to overdo because it is not loud. Because it does not announce itself, people keep adding drops and end up with something that smells thin and sharp. Start at the same number as its partner and stop there.

Cypress is the tailored one. Clean, dry and green, with a faint smoky edge underneath and almost none of the sticky resin you get from pine. If pine is the forest floor, cypress is the avenue of tall trees on a hot afternoon.

• Pine is sappy, bright and obviously outdoor. The sharpest of the three and the one that reads as fresh air.
• Cypress is drier, smoother and more composed. Less sweet, more structured, and the easiest of the three to wear.
• Cedarwood is warm, soft and woody, a base note rather than a middle one, and the one for sleep.

In practice that makes cypress the conifer for daytime and for anything you want to smell clean rather than cosy: colognes, deodorants, desks and bathrooms. Put all three together, 2 cypress with 3 pine and 2 cedarwood, and you get the whole forest from top to base.

Cypress is one of the standard oils in homemade deodorant, and the reason is its smell rather than any claim about your body. It is dry and clean in a way that reads as freshness, and it holds up against the warmth of skin better than a citrus would.

It has a long traditional reputation as an astringent, drying oil, which is why it also turns up in foot powders and foot soaks. We would put it no more strongly than that: it is a well-established traditional use, not something we are going to dress up as a clinical effect.

A simple deodorant blend

• 6 drops cypress and 4 drops bergamot in 30ml of a carrier, which is about 1%.
• Underarm skin is thinner and more easily irritated than most, so start at 0.5% and patch test on your inner forearm first.
• Do not apply straight after shaving, and skip it entirely if the skin is already sore.
